This celebration, dedicated to Christ the Redeemer, to celebrate the end of the plague that hit Venice in 1576, has been repeated every third Sunday in July for 430 years and combines religious spirit with the celebratory atmosphere of an evening festival.
For the occasion, from sundown onwards, Venetians and tourists organise dinners and dances on boats that end at 11.30 pm with the majestic firework display in St. Mark’s Basin.
